Strategy & Planning

Our mission at STANDING STONE CONSULTING, INC. is to help create the safest environment possible, while at the same time supporting and enhancing the primary mission of our client's organization and facility. We know that the environment heavily impacts performance and behavior, by understanding and manipulating the environment we can positively influence behavior and improve performance and security. Our consultants work closely with our clients to develop effective strategies that create a place that is productive, comfortable, and safe.

"We found these concepts to be straightforward, powerful tools with which to make informed decisions."

Paul D. Felder, ALA, APA

Developing an effective security and emergency strategy begins with understanding the mission of the client. The STANDING STONE team takes the time to understand what our clients do and how they do it. This is a fundamental step in developing a comprehensive strategy. The old adage "one size fits all" does not apply to security and emergency response planning. What works well in one situation often fails in another. Each facility has its own unique circumstances and so must develop its own equally unique plan.

Another key piece of developing an effective plan is performing an assessment that will:

Identify and prioritize the assets to be protected

Define the level of threat the organization and facility may face

Determine the vulnerability to the identified threats

Evaluate the risks (the consequences of hostile actions) to the mission of the organization and facility.

By understanding what our clients do and how they do it, and combining that with our assessment analysis , we can, in conjunction with our clients, determine which security and emergency response measures will most effectively protect the clients assets, i.e., the people, the process, and the property. Additionally, we can use this analysis to develop an emergency response plan where the client can effectively respond to an emergency and return to an operational condition as quickly as possible.

“I am very used to going to a site and designing systems using only mechanical means and having a very narrow view and using a “cookie cutter” approach to security. I can now offer my customers a more comprehensive solution at a much lower cost.”

Lori Stephenson

Strategy (the plan) and tactics often are confused when it comes to security and emergency response. Tactics are those devices and techniques, and policies and procedures that are implemented to achieve the plan. Tactics are ultimately designed to modify behaviors by deterring, detecting, delaying, or denying the ability to behave inappropriately. With our team approach, vulnerabilities are identified, plans are developed, and then tactics are selected to produce the desired behavioral effects. Many times tactics are chosen without an understanding of the effect on behavior that the tactic actually produces. For example, card readers and lock systems are often touted as able to "control access" but once a door is opened, anyone or any number of people may enter. Misapplied tactics often create a false sense of security and potential liabilities, as they do not always produce the desired results.
